Superstar Interviews - AJ Smooth |
AJ Smooth is one of Impact
Pro Wrestling's top wrestlers, holding the record for longest IPW
Heavyweight Title Reign, 15 months. He's also the current IPW
heavyweight champion. On top of that, he's making a name for himself
around the country. Let's have a sit down chat with the one, the only,
the awesome, AJ Smooth!
Davegoheel:
So,
AJ, you recently worked in Le Mars, correct? How was that? AJ
Smooth: It was about what you would expect for a fair show. Excrement
and
stench everywhere, loud barbaric noises. And a bunch of animals, too. Davegoheel:
I see.
I'm guessing that you thought the same of the crowd? AJ Smooth: I was referring to the crowd. And then the animals. I’ve only got one speed and on brakes. Try to keep up, kid. Davegoheel:
Fair
enough. I think it’s obvious that absolutely nobody likes you. How come? AJ Smooth: Because I’m the best, and that bothers people because they can’t relate to this much awesome. Davegoheel:
It
doesn’t seem like you’re the best. It took you quite a while to take
that title
away from Montoya X. AJ
Smooth: What? How many title shots did he get when I was champ? Dozens,
maybe even 100! How many rematches did I get? One. That's all it took. Davegoheel:
100?
Well, that’s not exactly what the track record says, but all right. So
what are
your future plans for IPW? Where, as champion, are you taking us? AJ
Smooth: Continue to dominate the Heavyweight division? Where else is
there to
go but down? Davegoheel:
I
think that’s where you’re heading if guys like Nicky Free and Tony Sly
get a
shot at your belt. They certainly have the crowd backing them up, and
that can
be a very powerful thing. AJ
Smooth: Well, that’s their first mistake. The crowd can’t help you win
a match.
The moment you start catering to those Neanderthals, you start to lose
your
edge. Davegoheel:
Well,
a guy like you must have plans to expand his territory beyond IPW. What
do you
think of the Indy scene of Iowa? AJ
Smooth: I think that it’s mine to conquer. I teamed up with Ryan Slade
the
first time and became #1 contenders for
the tag titles! Davegoheel:
You’ve
made quite a name for yourself. Ever think of getting a partner and
ruling the
tag team scene? AJ
Smooth: Been there in IPW. I dominated then and there’s no reason to
think I
wouldn’t now. That being said, I’m in a couple of tag teams to
establish myself
in other promotions. Davegoheel:
I’m
not sure. With new teams emerging, you never know exactly who could
take you.
Anyways, here’s a fun question. If you could punch one superstar in the
face,
who would it be? AJ
Smooth: Define superstar. Davegoheel:
Wrestler.
Or, if it tickles your fancy, promoter, announcer, or ref. AJ
Smooth: Miz and Morrison. Copyright infringement. Davegoheel:
Let’s
stay local here. We’re talking IPW. Unless, of course, you gave
somebody that
nickname, in which case I’d be interested in hearing the story. AJ
Smooth: Locally? Who haven’t I punch in the face? Ugly. I would punch
him in
the face. Davegoheel:
He
seems to have quite a following to back him up, and you know what they
say:
Never get in a fight with an ugly guy, he has nothing to lose. AJ
Smooth: Well, what if I hit him so hard that he has to get
reconstructive
surgery and the plastic surgeon screws up and makes him handsome? What
then,
huh, Mr. Brilliant? Davegoheel:
Then…well I’m not exactly sure how to reply to that. Let’s move on,
shall we?
Who do you see going places in IPW? And don’t even say yourself, you
egocentric
brat. AJ
Smooth: Well, I see a lot of potential in lots of younger guys. The
best they
can hope for is 4th place. Because I’m 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd, Daddy! Davegoheel:
Anybody that you’re personally hand-grooming as a successor? You can’t
be on
top forever. AJ
Smooth: I will be buried with my title! And I like Sparrow’s swagger.
If only
he’d leave the fans behind, he could do something. Davegoheel:
I’m
thinking that Sparrow’s swagger is what KEEPS the fans behind him.
Anyways, the
awesomeness that is AJ Smooth had to be triggered by something. What
got you
into wrestling? AJ
Smooth: Being a master at both physical and verbal confrontations made
it a
natural fit. Bret Hart, too. Davegoheel:
Your
successful like him. Ever see yourself getting screwed over by the boss. AJ
Smooth: Troy Peterson wouldn’t dare! Davegoheel:
I
don’t know. He let’s Marshal Scott wrestle, so he’s obviously done more
drastic
things. AJ
Smooth: Ah, but I have the negatives. Davegoheel:
The
negative win loss record, if that’s what you’re referring, too.
Seriously, it
seems like your only gaining victories by cheating when that, and don’t
mind if
I use your own words, “Neanderthal”, Billy J isn’t looking. AJ
Smooth: Negatives of the incriminating photos, bub! And so what if I’ve
taken a
few short cuts. This belt belongs to me and I intend to keep it. Davegoheel:
Intending to do something and actually doing it are two different
things,
especially considering Mitch Paradise recently made a showing. AJ
Smooth: Who walked away with the title? Need I say more? AJ
Smooth: Yeah, because it was scheduled months ago! And it looks
awesome, just
like me, Daddy! Davegoheel:
One
last thing. What would you suggest to anybody trying to get into IPW? I
know
that there is a lot of young talent in Iowa itching to take away your
titles. AJ
Smooth: Find a good trainer. Don’t settle for someone because they’re
cheap or
close. Find someone who knows they’re stuff and that has connections.
Or just
train with TS. Which ever is easier. I touch for him. Davegoheel:
I understand. Well, thanks
for your time. It’s been a…very interesting time. |
